Hi,sorry for the touble, but iam new to inboard ingines, although i have been sailing since 1973 i have allways had an outboard engine,so here we go,my present engine a perkins 4.107 has expired,so i went with a friend to view a low line perkins 4.108 this has the starter on the opposite side from the 4.107,the 4.108 starter is on left hand viewing from the stern forward,my friend was of the opinion that the 4.108 would not fit my borg warner velvet drive gearbox,if anyone can please advise i would be very greatful.Thanks.Ronnie.

The bell housing from the 4107 will not fit on the 4108 but there are bell housings for the 4108 that take a velvet drive - I replaced the velvet drive on my 4107 with one from a 4108. What gearbox was on the 4108 originally?

I replaced a 107m with a 108 out of a van, I had to use the manifold, water pump, oil filter adapter, bell housing and flywheel from the 107 but i dont remember having any problems, but it was 20 years ago.

Why do you say they wont fit?

Because the starter motor is on a different side on each engine. The picture below shows a 4107 with the velvet drive removed (complete with leaky emulsified transmission fluid) and the starter motor is on the right of the picture below the filter. On the 4108 the starter motor would be on the left of the picture so the bell housing would have to be different to accommodate it.

That dont matter, the starter can be fitted on either side of the engine. but as he could fit the starter, bell housing, back plate and flywheel from the 107 it would be the same as it is now.IE as in the picture above.

I thought your concerns were that the later 108 had a "pre engaged starter", if that were the case he has the right flywheel to fit the inertia starter or he would need a starter converter plate to use the later starter (with the correct ring gear)

As said before, it can be done Iv'e done it!

I'm not convinced that the 4108 can take the starter on the other side. I will have to look at the manual.

I was going to say that - the 4107 became the 4108 when they fitted cylinder liners.Looking at my workshop manual for the 4107 and 4108, and the 499, it shows pictures of the engines, some with left hand starter motor and some with right hand. Seems it is ambidextrous
