The weather people are describing the Nor’easter that is happening off Hatteras right now as the “perfect storm”. We have had two days of 35 to 50kt NE winds with gusts to 75kts, combined with high tides which has flooded dozens of towns. The remains of Hurricane Ida combined with another low and there was a high pressure to the north which stopped the lows moving and squashed the isobars very tightly. We are in Norfolk Va, and at our marina the floating docks came off their piles. Fortunately the marina staff had tied the docks to other piles with ropes and nothing actually floated away. Strangely, although this storm will last at least another 36 hours, it is not named and these Nor’easters never are. Fortunately we have not sustained any damage but as it is not named, at least, insurance companies should be perfectly happy to cover damaged boats! The water in Norfolk town reached 3ft in many places with each high tide. Roads were blocked and hundreds of cars under water or trapped. On the outer banks at Hatteras, it destroyed dunes that protected holiday homes, which were destroyed and carried away by the sea, apparently only washing machines and metal things there to show that homes existed and beds and furniture afloat. We are waiting to cross back to St Martin just hope the seas drop soon and we don’t hit a wardrobe on our crossing!
