Was out yesterday with some friends who have not been out boating before, got to the boat and was asked what are those?, pointing at the nav lights, and before I could answer came the retort - boats don’t have indicators do they!!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

So what have folk said to you that’s had you in fits?

Peter

Heard that you were asked the same question about a washing machine and you didn't even know that they are at the end of your pontoon in the laundromat!

I was on a 60+ footer in St Kats once and a passer by asked me if THAT was the engine, she pointed to a 2hp Yammy laying on the deck.

Was hanging around the start line of a Cowes week race explaining to my guests the start squence and a few seconds after the start gun was fired, an enormous stinkie happened to go pounding over the start line and the blond said "Gosh that's unfair, he's gonna win hands down".

For several years I was the Committee boat at Cowes Week. This involved me anchoring in a position off the RYS and flying an enormous flag saying "Committee Boat" so big we had a special flag standard to bear it. Yeh! before you say it I was also showing an Anchor Ball. Additionally in the Racer's documents it stated I was the Committee boat and on starting they had to pass between me and the RYS. Never the less there were always a few Racers who would yell abuse at me telling me to get out of the '#'~;¬`ing way and words to the effect that I was blocking the start line.

"Yes, sailboats can do that because they have a deeper rudder"- remark by a bystander on seeing three scout boats ferrygliding the current into a berth with just inches to spare

"Excuse me, does this go to Wemeldinge? " - boater from 21ft cuddy at the entrance of the canal Terneuzen-Gent. I was standing there as head instructor, having just explained the necessities of chartwork in a busy waterway like the Westerschelde, saying that without a proper chart you are just like a hedgehog on a highway. And no, it doesn't go to Wemeldinge. For starters, the Canal of Hansweert is on the northern shore of the Westerschelde, past 4 or 5 sand bars (drying), and you need to cross the main waterway twice !

"Boatie with hull nr xxxxx, plz leave my lock and don't present yourself for the next two turns" - Lockmistress (hmmmm) to a sports cuddy that entered the lock as soon as the space between the opening gates was big enough, never mind waiting untill the gates had opened completely, untill the boats IN the lock had exited, untill the light had turned green, untill the barges had entered the lock, untill received permission to enter. Waaay to soon, clearly.
