Similar post on "Wanted" forum, so apologies for partial double post...

The sender on my Penta MD broke over the winter and I did a temporary repair which broke at the weekend. Does anyone know if this sender unit was used by any other engine manufacturer so that I can find a cheaper-than-volvo equivalent? Photo of the old one attached.

Ta,
David.

cheaper-than-volvo equivalent ??

Its only €150 from Marine Parts Express. I think I could manage without a tach at that price.

Try and find an old engine that you can take the sensor off

if all else fails consider fitting a Tinytach if you want a working tach.

I thought the rev counter was powered from the alternator?
Some are, some aren't.
OP does not say exactly which engine but that looks like the same sensor as on The MD11C. (senses the speed of the hand starting gear !)

Yup - it's from an MD11C (I should have said). One of the lugs broke off at a point just under the black plastic. I tried soldering the lug on and then aralditing it to keep the new lug in place. However, the vibration and heat has weakended it and it fell apart on Sunday. So, no rev counter at the moment (though the MD11 tends to let you feel how fast it is going mechanically!).

I'm sure this part must be used on other engines, even non-marine, though don't know which ones. Many other Penta engines seem to share the same part number.

Ta,
David.

If this feeds a VDO tacho, then one of the magnetic pickups from RS may well work. The smallest one works on our yanmar with a VDO tacho - the bigger ones have higher outputs, so would probably be less fussy about the distance from the gear it senses. Some metalwork may be needed to mount them.

YMMV

Magnetic Pickup

Thanks all.

Andy, would you know if the RS unit is electrically equivalent to the Penta MD rev counter?

Ta.

Thanks all.

The short answer is no.

I suspect that it's the same thing (an inductive pick-up) but I don't know. I presume that it's feeding a VDO instrument, in which case I do know that the sensor above will work on the inductive sensor input to a VDO tacho.

Final Answer, I hope

All,

Just to close out this thread, I found a company that sells instrumentation and received the following, helpful information. I've ordered one, so think that I'm sorted. All in, around £60.

Thanks to all who helped.

David.

The replacement part is 340-804-007-002 as you have pictured - no idea what 340 009 is although it could be an American part.

We do not carry these in stock but they have them in Germany (usually takes around 1 week to receive it in the UK).
