Bummed a lift from RickP the other week, and he's got this cutesy PDA nav thing in the car. Well, I managed to get lost again last week, so it got me thinking.

Makro are doing this one for £239 ex VAT. Is it any good, or am I better off buying Tomtom Navigator for my Palm Tungsten for £211 or so?

Is there any advantage in having a PDA dedicated to just nav, or is just going to get nicked?

The only down side i see with the tom tom navigator including the latest navigator 3 is that

a) doesnt give road names only when to turn, i like to know which road name im looking for.

b) doesnt do full 7 digit postcode route finding only 5, it relies on street name and road.

I havent used one of these but im currently trawling through options myself and will probably go pda with aa navigator software.

The navman i use shows the street names and the 3d view is excellent.

Being fully self contained means that it is actually quite useful when walking too!

I recently got off the tube in london switched it on - opened the ariel and placed the beast in my pocket, the voice guided me to my meeting.

Got a few odd looks en route - but that happens anyway!

Hi

yes the navman 510/ 630 to me looks a good piece of kit.

The only downside i see to the pda's is that basically you are loading software onto a pocket pc which to me might be like trying to play games on the pc- always open to erros and malfunctions as opposed to say the tom tom go /navman which to carry on the analogy might be more like then playing the same game on a playstation or any dedicated games machine- always less errors and frustrations but this is only me guessing I have no idea.

Got one a couple of months ago from a co called globalpositioningsystems.co.uk, up in the north east somewhere. Excellent website and very efficient service. I got a bluetooth PDA (HP3715) with Tomtom bluetooth and its excellent. PDA can also be used as basic chart plotter with a bit of software from Maptech, not sure about this though as a 3.5 inch screen is a bit small for my liking.

Yip, can also Recommend globalpositioningsystems.co.uk, I bought a GPS, and a Satnav, system from then, they have real people at the end of a phone to talk to as well!!!

Will certainly use them again.

I use Tom Tom, and have to diagree, it does give road name/number as well as when to turn!! Although tis is not on the audio.

using a PDA means that you have the best of all for flexability

Well, TomTom Navigator for the Palm Tungsten T3 turned up today. Wired version, as I figured the GPS needed a wire for power anyway... Totally brilliant! There's also a download to use it in 480x320 mode, which is good. £199 delivered from Amazon, FWIW.

Chuffed.
