I'm trying to find a PC monitor with:

  • 12V or 14v power pack (so I can power direct from the battery, but see below)
  • VESA mount
  • HDMI input
  • Screen diagonal 23" to 24"
  • Good brightness levels, at least 250 cd/m² but preferably above 300.

At first some of the Samsung models looked OK, and I like their screens, but they don't appear to have the VESA mount.

I'm not averse to opening a 230V model and going directly into the 12V rail if someone has the info to do so.

Suggestions?

I was looking at one of the lilliput touch screens last night. Dont know if they do anything bigger but spec is what you want and very low power consumption.

I have seen a Samsung wall mounted on a Samsung bracket although I don't own one. Do you really need VESA or would Samsung's own bracket work?

If the deskstand attaches with bolts, another option would be to make a Samsung to VESA adaptor by bending and drilling some sheet steel.

My Samsung 22" Smart TV runs off 12V, accepts HDMI, and is fitted to a bracket with bolts at 100mm centres, (VESA?).

Don't know about the brightness, but I can watch Sky Sports fine via the feed from my laptop.

I have a 12v pc box with a 17" Cello 12v tv. Not sure of brightness. Might be worth looking at their larger versions. Has vesa mounting holes, hdmi, etc.

You need something like an Odys base... It has everything you asked for and uses only 12 watts.
Why would you want anything that runs on 220v or uses more than 20watts on a boat when extremely energy efficient solutions exist.

Must be VESA. Lilliput? I think the clue is in the name :)

You say the ones you've "looked at" don't "appear" to have VESA mountings. Do you mean you've just looked at the specs on-line?

When we replaced our tv/monitor this winter, all the different ones we looked at in shops had the mounting holes so it seems to be a standard feature.

I've looked online, and checked in stores, as well as contacting the manufacturers. Only a few monitors have an external power pack AND a VESA mount, but a lot of the ones with TV functions have them.

LG make several suitable models, but the power pack is 19V so may need a DC-DC converter.

I've now bought a Samsung Monitor/TV T24C550ND to try out (14V power); I'm not sure if the TV part will work in Europe, but it was only $150 in Costco.

Do you know of any decent dc/dc converters? I've a Samsung 14v monitor running on a cheap ebay converter but has diagonal lines across the screen, tried various capacitors with no luck.

I have a Samsung TV that runs of a 14v mains converter. I found a 12v adapter with options for 12v then 15v and higher. The TV is happily running off the 12v option, so is obviously tolerant. I'll try and find the make model and source when I get back on board tonight or tomorrow.

Regarding the VESA mount, it should be fairly trivial to epoxy some nuts on the back of the case in the correct mounting pattern. This would improve your options considerably, and given the resale value of such items it won't really do an awful lot of harm in the long run.
