PBO Readers, you saw it here first :)

Bit intrigued at this stuff.
How will your efforts be funded - sounds like a business, with a 'chief executive' - where's the money coming from?
Seems you could end up with a humungous database of boats and all their expensive bits - a real thieves' paradise in the wrong hands. How will you safeguard it?
Also you say on your website that you'll give bits of users' data to various people (make some of it 'public' as well, I think you said) in the event of a loss?
Interesting idea overall but I'm a tad concerned about all this data and how secure it will be......

We are appealing to the insurance companied for the bulk of our funding and that will be topped up by some adverts dotted around the site.

I think Nick wanted to be Chief Exec because otherwise we might get him to make the tea. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The public part of the database is in the event of you reporting your boat as stolen, we would distribute to the other members (ie public) a shortened version of the data - enough that your boat would be recognised but no personal or fine detail.

The data itself is going to sit along side some very secure stuff indeed, I cant really say more than that - other than we are holding off making the registry live until everyone is happy with the conditions of use.

I suppose it may be a good idea in some of the busy harbours like on the solent, but it is a complete waste of time to the rest of the boat owning population like me that keep there boats no where near the busy places.
And do you really think insurance companys will lower there premiums, i suspect not.

All indications have been that they will, the current recovery rates for lost boats are terrible - around 5% at times. We are certain that a big impact can be made on that, if we are right then the insurance companies are going to have to reduce premiums.

We also have a range of other projects that will be of use even if crime is not a worry where you are, but right now we are focussing on getting the database right.

crime is a worry to me, i was a victim of boat theft last year, but this initiative would not solve any problems around here.
that of course is my opinion others will no doubt disagree

I am sorry to hear that and for misunderstanding you.

It would be really nice to think that your missing boat/gear would have been returned to you with our system in place, but I guess there is only one way to find out; though it is not going to turn back the clock. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
