Can anyone tell me which way the selector lever should be rotated to select forward and reverse directions on Hurth HBW30 and 40 boxes?
The two ratios are so close that it is difficult to decide by hand rotation of the engine.
(I need the info to decide on right or left hand prop).

Try a google search for info.
We have a R/H prop on our HBW30 but wouldn't know if there may be L/H option.
Not sure what way the lever throws for forward selection.

Graham.

Are you sure its an HBW30?
I am sure they start at 50.
Any way the lever on the s/b side of the box should move to the rear for forward boat motion, right hand prop.
How I know this with the 50, is my boat has a 50 and was set up for the lever to move forward for forward boat motion, but the boat had a left hand prop, which was useless.
So after about 40 long phone conversations, ( before buying a new R/H prop) I was reasured that it should be to the rear.
Forward gear on HBW boxes, ( at least the 50/ 2R) should be the lower out put shaft ratio.
My box is 1.6:1 reverse and 2:1 forward, forward been the slower speed, as the reverse gear is really only meant for reversing and can be slammed straight into reverse from a fast forward motion, its something to do with there only been a stronger thrust bearing on one end of some shaft in box.
Hope this helps.
