If my passport is valid on the day of travel outwards from the UK and still valid on the day of my return (but only by a couple of weeks) is this OK? Or do some places require, say, a month or more unexpired time? Advice please.

ps air travel

I think that spells trouble. Loads of countries have policy of not letting you in unless you have at least 6months left to run on your passport. But it does depend on the country concerned. I'd renew now if I were you!

could be a problem if you got ill abroad and stuck there, is Spain last week at check in they told my wife her passport ran out the following month, we hadnt noticed

Defo 6 months for the US. They WILL NOT let you enter if less.

if you send it to BA in London they have a renewal service for £75 get it done in a couple of days.

most countries ask for 6 months passport validity, Europe isn't so bad, I lost my passport in Majorca last year, and they didn't really bother upon my arrival back in the UK, didn't even ask my address, but let me back in anyway. (which actually isn't good at all)

Think if you are going outside Europe you most definately need to get your passport sorted, and within Europe you could well experience problems.

Just renewed daughters passport using the normal postal method - the new one arrived in just 4 days! Perhaps it's a quiet time of year.
