Good Morning,
Can any one help please? We have a Pansy Charcoal Heater on our boat, old but in good condition, except the lining of the chrome lid (could be asbestos) is degrading fast. Pascall Atkey want £35.00 to replace a circle of material 7" in diameter!!!!!!. So shall attempt to make one myself. Any suggestions as to what non combustible material we should use?
Many thanks
Anne and Peter

The stuff you want is called millboard. You could try Googling it (I haven't).

I re-lined my heater using the stuff. You wet it, not too much, and mold it to shape. Let it dry naturally before lighting the heater.

tubs of fire cement couple of quid each maybe

or if you need to cut a solid disk, I do have an 8' x 4' sheet of vermiculite fire board, the 'proper' commercial name for it escapes me, stuff that gets used for all sorts, looks like asbestos but isn't, used for debris plates above stoves in open chimneys, lining to go against the wall where fires are being installed that sort of stuff

It was donated to Pansy by a chap that installs solid fuel fires among other things. there's more than we'll ever need. its about 10-12mm thick, so if its sounds suitable you can happily have a lump for a few bob in the next RNLI tin you pass

might be a week or 2 before I can get to the boat though - we're still very much snowed in!

Thankyou for your help
Porthandbuoy, yes it is Millboard and we hope to find a small amount from somewhere.
Monkeytrousers, Thankyou for the offer of vermiculite, but it is not exactly what we are looking for, thankyou all the same.
Old_Salt, we will ask around in Stove shops, thankyou
All the Best
