Pascal Atkey\'s heaters- Can they make enough heat ???

Phoebe is a shallow draft gaff cutter 30' long with 10' beam, 5' headroom in cabin and 3' up forward where my bunk is. In fact about 530 cu. ft. I tried to figure it with a BTU calculator but am not sure that will work here.

Better to ask if any of you who have had a Pansy think one might keep my boat reasonably warm; say 60 0dd degrees when its say 40 degrees fahrenhet outside ?

I have a complete Pansy ready to install but dont want to start drilling until I'm reasonably sure it will do the job

Although I have recently installed a Pansy - have not yet tried her out yet; I have a copper one that I have polished up and I would like to take interior photos of it gleaming before it goes dark brown.

When I was doing the research for which type of heater, I did a search on the Pansy, and it the general opinion I got was that they are good for around 26ft max and they are very much less effective in yachts over that size. Roach is 22ft, so I hope it does the job. Hope I have helped.

Thanks! It was because I read your thread that I added my questions. I talked to the owner of Pascal Atkey's last year. The BTU rating isn't that high, so as you say, it's questionable as to weather it's enough.
Actualy the story is longer than this! The real prob. is that I can't find a place to put a heater! Somehow I seem to keep finding new... well.. old ones.. With every new relic I rush to the boat, dash below and try it... here... then there... then do lots of drawings on napkins... and... so on...and on. Maybe I should just get a second dog!

I had one on a 27 ft cutter and it was just right. The issue is heat distribution - mine was in the main cabin so was very cosy, but if you have to install it in the forepeak only a fraction of the heat will find its way aft. Its also possible to have too big a solid fuel stove. I installed the Pansey as a replacement for a coal stove which was in serious danger of setting alight the deckhead.

Thanks Roger. Based on your experience do you think I'm over the mark with my beamy 30 ft'er. ?

My father has one on his 32' x 8'6" beam Robert Clark.

Didn't often use it - but can remember on cold wet west coast of Scotland cruises in the dark 60's and 70's it was a godsend.

We could certainly sit down below comfortably warm once it had got up to temp - this may take an hour or so - but on the other hand, fill her up, close the air inlet a bit and you had a comfortable warm cabin and we let it go out on its own accord overnight.

I'm sure I have a photo of my brother and myself holed up in some anchorage with a bit of orange courlene as a washing line drying out wet socks etc.

I would say that it would heat up the cabin. Maybe not roasty toasty, but enough to dry things out.

I had one in my Fairey Atalanta (26ft) which used to stop me freezing when sleeping aboard in mid winter (don't ask why..) but beware! I had the cabin pretty well sealed up and woke with a hell of a headache more than once ... probably lucky not to be dead of CO poisoning. So make sure you keep the cabin well ventilated when it's in use!
