parts4engines and ASAP 500FG Fuel filters - price differences

The ASAP one is genuine Racor; the other is a cheaper copy. If you want to spend even less, there are similar copies on eBay from about £25.

I have a £50 copy, it is accurately made of suitable materials and works perfectly with genuine Racor filter elements.
Any extra spent on a genuine Racor model would have been completely wasted.

A few years ago I needed a major part for my Honda car. I was quoted ~£900 for the genuine Honda branded item or £500 for a UK made part. I asked what the difference was and was told they were the same but the Honda branded one had been to Japan and back!

Did it go there and back Business Class?

I bought oil and cav fuel filters for my friends Volvo at a very good price. All branded Perkins. Quick delivery too.

The parts for engines filter is the same as this: Racor Type Diesel Filter FG500

It's an aftermarket copy (they very clearly state that in their ad'). Copy Racors are easily spotted by looking at the mounting brackets.

I don't see an issue with using the aftermarket housings, but i'd use genuine Racor filter elements.
The Chinese company making most of these Racor copies is Headman Rongsun. In 2012 our firm overhauled the compressors serving the AC for the entire Virgin West Coast mainline Pendolino trains. Each compressor required a new cartridge oil filter and we had to buy 600 of them. We bought samples from Rongsun and extensively examined and tested them, then we went on to use 600 so now virtually every Pendolino has these filters fitted. Nil failures at all.

I would not hesitate to use these pattern filters, and have had no issues at all since I acquired several boxes for my boating as a side order in 2012. I still have a few left, although I use the larger 900 size.

Interesting Trevor. I have a couple of the "copies" here to fit to my boat, the elements do seem "flimsier" than the Racor ones. Racor also claim:

"Proprietary Aquabloc® cartridge stops and captures fine hard and soft contaminants, while remaining water coalesces on the media surface. The coalesced water gathers into larger drops that then fall down into the clear "

There's only about £3 difference in price with the 500 series elements.

I have said here before as a long time user of an ebay Racor copy that I am very satisfied with quality and performance. I did remove and 'fettle' a bit of casting fraze externaly before fitting genuine Racor element and seals.

Some suggest they are a "Chinese Rip Off"

Not true, they are a close copy and use Racor's Tubo technology but the Racor Patent is long expired.

I have a genuine one and an ebay copy side by side. They have seen very little use( about 3 hours each) so not much to report re their efficacy. However one thing to watch for is the pressure gauges that screw into the lids don’t fit into the copy. It’s a different thread on the T piece. The gauges are genuine racor gauges.

Our ‘copy’ needed a bit of fettling before I was happy with it:

Sealing ‘lip’ for the lid got sanded flat and finished with a knife sharpening block (the powder coat or whatever it is made it uneven) and some rough bits of casting/swarf were removed from the ‘clean’ side of the housing (requiring a long shaft rasp in the die grinder).

Otherwise great value. You can carry a complete spare at the (eBay) price!

I always seem to go to parts4engines as their prices and services are very good.
One thing I have noticed is that the spares for my Perkins M30 generator are sometimes cheaper if I go for the Volvo 2030. Same engine of course. I always compare before I buy.

I think for £3 then the Racor would be my preference, but last time I looked the price difference was a lot more. I expect even the Racor are made in China - possibly another line at Rongsun ! I do know they make Unipart cartridge filters.

Have you tried getting a price from a Massey Ferguson Tractor Dealer as the Perkins Engines are what they use and these parts could be on their shelves or available on next day delivery.
