I have allowed my part 1 to lapse. The Registry people require a survey which I have costed at over £400.Surely the original documents will confirm this without me going to the cost (no way) to having it remeasured.

It's their rules, no point appealing to us. Have you sent them your documentation?

Write your own survey using the data you have, you could even get a mate to sign it for you with a suitable "engineering qualification".

I'd have thought the original measuring document should still be OK for them. However, the registration process now requires a certificate endorsed by a classification society. The surveyor sends his numbers to his organisation, they send a certificate to Cardiff. If your original surveyor is still alive and kicking, maybe he can get his organisation to send a certificate for rather less than £400. When I did it last year, the International Institute of Marine Surveying wanted £85 to issue the certificate.

Unfortunately the survey has to be done by an MCA recognised measurer. Should not cost £400 if you use somebody locally and do it when the boat is out of the water.

That is new then, I renewed ours in November and whilst we had to pay an extra registration fee because it had run out we didn't need a survey. I did have copies of the original documents. £400 seems a bit steep, have you spoken to them on the phone?

How out of date? My last boat was on Pt 1 and the previous owner had taken it off the register as he part exchanged it for a new one. About a year later I tried to register it in my name and learned that it needed a survey. It's about 10 years ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy so I can't recall the detail but I called them and they agreed to register it based upon its previous listing.

It is a form of taxation, the Blue Book part 1 used to be a one off payment on purchase to change the owner's details. it was then decided to renew every 5 yrs "To keep the records up to date " :sleeping:
