Paris Rhone Replacement?

I have just removed the alternator from my VP 2003 it is the original Paris Rhone 50A which fits on just the 2 lugs. It has insulated earth.
The terminals are: B+ B- D+ & W.

My question is what other alternators are available as a reasonably direct replacement but with an increased output of 70 or 90 Amps.

There are lots of alternators available which will be more-or-less direct bolt-on replacements. You need a small-case unit with a 2" single foot. You could buy from an auto-electrics place, or get a more specialised marine alternator which will often give a higher output at low revs. I bought a Prestolite from Adverc (see prices here). Merlin offer a range of Balmar alternators (see prices here).

If you want a more powerful alternator, presumably you want better charging. A smart regulator might be a better investment than a big alternator, unless you have quite a big battery bank. Alternators can't produce more current than the batteries will accept, so a 70A or 90A alternator won't necessarily produce anything like that level of current.

What a selection and to think I thought it would be just the one replacement.

What a price difference though???.
They vary from about £130 to over £400, now that is a dilemma, read the spec, re read the spec.. Just gets foggy. However I will sort it over the weekend and part with the cash on Monday.

[/ QUOTE ] Just 2 things to note. First, some of the higher prices include a "smart" controller which pushes the price up. Second, you won't practically be able to drive anything bigger than 90-100A from a single pulley.

You can get a good 90A alternator for around £200.

Have you tried your local LSUK, they normally do a good price, and have a good range.
