King Olaf was the King of Norway, his son King Haaken (sp?) now rules. He was a real Yottie and everyone that met him couldn't fail to be impressed by his easy going manner coupled to the way he put people at their ease... and he was bigger than you are Syd.
Think of the Top Table at a 'do' everyone else is "below the salt" it dates back to when the Lord of the Manor had the top table etc.
PS.
Fancy coming up here this weekend? If not send the Missus, she's more intelligent to talk to anyway /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Yeppers! She's all home, the Marquee got blown down last night so thats packed away for the Winter. Sigh! that means if Syd comes we'll have to let him sleep indoors, potty training him is quite a chore you know, still I suppose we can put a rubber sheet on the bed.

All to do with when was a very expensive condiment/preservative only to be afforded by the nobility. If the king paid for it he bloody well wanted it where he could keep an eye on it ie on his table in a nice little box made specially for it complete with titchy little spoon..Did not the Romans get paid in salt hence Salary etc.
presume that if you could preserve food over winter you might get to see spring arrive.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Right, except for that his name was Olav , not Olaf a keen member of the Stick and Cloth Brigade and did actually win a gold in the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928 with the boat named "Norna".

The current King is Haakon, also a keen member of above group and together with his crew become World Champion in 1987 with the one tonne sailboat "Fram X"., and equally as easy going.

In general impressed with the knowledge demonstrated here......

King Olaf (Olav) was the Admiral of the RCYC in Cowes. Whenever in England he would pop in there for a pint and could be seen propping up the bar in paint besmattered trousers and old naval type blue pullover with the sleeves pulled up and his tattoos showing. Rarely there after 7:30pm because he didn't want to wear Jacket/Collar/Tie. He freely told anyone he had enough of dressing up when on official duties.
He would chat to all and sundry but hated any form of fawning. When there he just wanted to be just another Yottie.
