Forumites have been excellent source of advice on this in past threads, so looking for any suggestions of carriers to collect a parcel circa 50x50x50 cm from Belfast and deliver to Canada (Ontario). Daughter off there for 4 months, sending items ahead as only 20kilo flight allowance. 2 week time-scale. Looking for cheapest reliable carrier as online quotes so far have been very variable and some unexpectedly high- £70- £140.

TIA

Rob

What would it cost as excess baggage on her flight?

Don't know- hadn't thought of this, but certainly worth checking.

Ah- spotted a problem- most of relevant gear is in NI and she is flying to Canada from London- don't think two excess baggage charges (ie one to bring back to mainland UK) would make it competitive!

You used to be able to take excess baggage as air freight if you had a ticket to fly to the destination yourself. It worked out about half the normal air freight cost which made it worthwhile. The baggage went as air freight but not on your plane so you had to collect it a day or two later at your destination.
I'm not sure you can still do this but it would be worth checking it out.

On the other hand if that does not work, it is much cheaper for couriers to collect from UK mainland than here in NI so it would be beneficial to get it there if poss.

Do not send it Parcel Force, you cannot track it outside UK and it will probably get lost.

So courier to London then. What does the parcel weigh?

Parcel weight?- don't know as daughter is packing it but I am assuming at least or possibly more than the flight luggage, so 25Kg +??.

I will try to check with the airline tomorrow re excess baggage position as had previously just assumed it would be more expensive than separately sending an air freight parcel.

Just checked on website- excess baggage charge is £10 per kg above the 20 kilo allowance, so that is a non starter!

Most of what she wants is available in Canada and costs less than the excess charge!!!!! Well maybe large oversizes are more difficult as I have found:D:D:D

Less is more

Rob

The question has to be asked: why does she have to take anything more than basic kit? It doesn't matter if you're going for 4 days or 4 years - travel light and acquire/recyclce anything extra you need as-and-when. The essentials will in fact fit into a single handbag.

I always smile when seeing the kids leaving on a gap year with their rucksacks looming high over their heads like marines on a training exercise - but check out the long-term travellers who pass through transport hubs with little more than a day-bag containing a clean set of clothes.

She not back-packing- she's going to Uni with all the additional social etc committments that entails and what's more to the point, she's a 21 year old girl!! One day you may find yourself in a similar position with your kid & then you'll know! Boys may be easier tho, I wouldn't know- only male in my household- even dogs been done:D

Believe me I have suggested getting things out there, but I refer the Hon Gentlemen to my previous remark!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions of alternative Carriers & I will pass this info on to my daughter.

Update

Just in case info is of use to anyone else, surprisingly the cheapest carrier quote by a decent margin was DHL @ under £60 , total cost inc Insurance £61.

This was for est 25kg parcel.

Did you try to see if the air freight offer with your ticket was still offered?

I wasn't talking about excess baggage on your flight.

I said in my previous post that air freight could be had at half price if you had a ticket to the same destination.

Once you buy your own ticket you take your freight to the airport freight dept. and check it in there. You can do it several days in advance. It probably will not go on your flight but it will go to the same destination as you and you pick it up at that freight depo. at your leisure.
