Hi there, after some advice on converting from Paraffin to gas. i'm a live aboard who is tired of having to clean his Taylors stove to cook! Therefore I'd like to change cooker to gas. However I have a wooden boat, and would need to get a premade glass gas locker. Also would like to here some recommendations of best 2 burner /grill/oven cooker to go for. (not taylors (£1700, eek!). All help gratefully received!
Many thanks in advance

Why do you need to buy/build a glass locker? I once built a gas bottle locker out of marine ply and epoxy - the idea is that it is gas tight and you can achieve this easily with care. It was fitted against the hull side in the corner of the cockpit on our SCOD and a hole in the hull with a clam shell on the outside ensured that it drained overboard, and yet didn't fill wih water if we heeled over too far.

Can't say too much about choice of new cooker... PBO did a review of the most popular makes about eight months ago.

Gas lockers have been a concern of mine in past, however, as my boat can't accommodate an overboard-venting locker in the cockpit. Everything spilled in the cabins or cockpit ends up in the bilges.

The solution was to put the bottles in a wooden box on the deck against the coachhouse bulkhead . It doesn't need to be gas tight as it vents through the bottom. I put a solenoid on the regulator so I can turn on/off from inside the cabin. The only downside is that to keep the box a managable size I had to go over to the more expensive Gaz with smaller bottles. Not a problem for weekend, short duration use, though.

Making a gas locker with marine ply and epoxy would be easier than fitting in one to some standard dimensions I would think. We fitted a Force 10 cooker which was pricey (about £850 I think) but is good quality, not flimsy and easy clean S/S. Grill is inside the oven and the oven door opens completely and slides underneath so gimbal balance is maintained.

Like you, I got fed up with cleaning/servicing burners on our paraffin cooker. We changed to an Optimus model - pretty cheap, and all stainless steel, but much flimsier and lighter than most paraffin cookers or more expensive gas models (the Force 10). This means that the gimballing is more violent as well. Weighting underneath will sort this out. We built our gas locker from ply and epoxy(check for leaks with water) and drained it overboard at the transom (we have a seacock on the hose just in case..). A friend of ours with a timber boat has kept his gas bottle on the sidedeck alongside the cockpit in chocks, covered with a purpose made vinyl cover - it's been there manyyears and is no problem and the hose runs through the deck almost above the cooker.
