Ahoy!
I'm heading to the UK in the next day or two to sort out the paperwork side of things for the boat. I understand that I need a VHF licence. How do I get this? Do I have to do a course or can I just pay blah blah amount and get the certificate?
Re: Insurance. I'd rather not have any because my boat was cheap and I am doing this on a tight budget.
And finally, which bank do you recommend as one that will be the most helpful to the sailor? I'm with the RBS and they are crap. I would like to change banks, however, I don't have a 'residence' in the UK. Will this hinder me?
Advice greatly received.

Hi Maria, regarding radio courses follow the link on this page to pick one near to where you will be. RYA VHF COURSES
As for insurance, I would certainly recommend that you take out third party liability. Many places(Marinas etc) will look for it.
Afraid I can't really help you with the banking bit, but I am sure there will be someone who can. Didn't you have a property in the UK or was that somewhere else.

I find the RBS excellent for the sailor.
You may have trouble getting a UK bank account, without a UK address, new legislation regarding money laundering and terrorist money etc, being the problem.

Hi Maria, I agree with H00's points. You can go without insurance but will have to anchor most places as marinas won't let you in without it. Many banks can be used via the internet, can RBS? It might make it easier.

How about taking insurance out for areas close to shore and forget the ocean passages! most crunches occur when there is something hard close by and theres only the odd whale out there in the shiny blue! and they wont claim! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif))

With regard to the Bank I think it would be a good idea while you are here in the UK to go into the RBS and explain what your needs are while you are traveling and I think you will find them more then happy to help, I have been with them for many years and I've never had any problems at all.
I mainly use their on-line banking service and couple this to an Ing Direct on line savings account so that I can move money back and forth from each account when or where ever I am.

As for insurance I intend to go with robind's view, that is only insure if the need arises on certain coastal passages, other then that i think your better off spending the money on better gear for the boat (bigger and/or extra ground tacke etc)

A ships radio license will give you a valid call-sign. You can get all the info you need about getting one HERE.

In UK waters, you need an operators license. Since your boat is in Mexico, the UK powers that be will probably overlook the fact that you don't have an operators license; cos there's nothing much they can do about it. BUT, as a good rule of thumb, other countries will say as long as you have complied with your countries regulations, it's OK to sail in our waters i.e. get an operators license.

As for insurance, I agree that public liability is the bare minimum that you should get, especially as you will come across many a litigious yank that might stub his toe on your delicate rubber duck.

I am not certain under 'what rules' you are coming to Britain or bringing the boat to Britain?
Do you have work and an address in the UK?
Is the boat UK registered or where is she registered if not in the EC?

Whilst we love our American cousins to death - they are welcome as visitors for a certain period to life in the EC - 9 months I think - but after that they start to have problems with visa extensions, work permits and worst of all with TAX on the boat. Possibly import duty and certainly VAT @ around 17-19% depending on EC country.

I am not sure a VHF licence is in the same league.

Thanks all for the information. Nice to see you Stingo! Might be popping into SA this week! Off to Istanbul tonight and will look for cheap flight.
Again, thanks to all. This site never fails to dish out the goods.

Promises, promises. That's all I ever hear from you. Email me when you get here.

Insurance.

Don't matter how much your boat's worth, without it you will still be in deep sh*t if you ding someone's Swan 60 and they catch you.

Get third-party.

Re: Insurance.

Checked email and couldn't find the BJ there. Best you deliver them personally.

Re: Insurance.

Didn't know you were a masochist.
