sorry folks, another dismally inevitable gardeners Q time again... Hopefully in a few weeks I'll regail you all with magnificent tales of my daring do, but for the time being, let's talk wipers.
Fed upwith the pathetic vague waving of my existing pendulum wipers, and no windscreen washers, I am thinking of upgrading. Anyone done this? Recommendations? Horror stories?
Not sure which would be best surviving, when taking a green one(little chance of it actually being green in the North Sea..)over the bow? Pendulum wipers or ones that come out of the bottom, upwards?

Our pantograph wipers are perhaps the worst part of our boat. They are always breaking, they cost £50 a go and last about 3months, they are noisy, they are not long enough and we can't fit bigger ones because the blade would hit the top of the window, they are impossible to adjust because the rubbish painted mild steel clips break off when you try to adjust them. One of them broke off on a quick 5nm trip to Bembridge today.
Downward facing washers are also a bad move, unless the nozzle is perfectly clear then the jet dribbles out and blows away before it hits the screen.

I would go for bottom hinged ones, no particular reason except all new boats seem to have them and they just look like they are more suited to the role.

If I recall you can get conversion kits and use your origonal motors, the ones I saw were SS and adjustable for length, I will see if I can find the references and post it.
As far as washers are concerned my view is to do as per rally car and route the tube along the blade for a direct squirt.

I'm also considering pantograph wipers. Have a look at Vetus. They have an on-line catalogue with all the sizing info so you can work out what you need for your particular window.

http://www.vetus.com then select Digital Media and follow through to get to the catalogue

Cheers,

Jerry

Its me again!!
in answer to your question, you can get pantograph conversion kits but these often premeturly burn the motors out becouse people want bigger blades.
If your gona change to pantograph wipers and fit washers consider the type of pantograh arms that have the washer jet and pipe already fixed to the arm these are (only my opinion) by far the best.
There dosent seem to be any reason for or agains top or bottom mounted wipers apart from ease of instilation eg: room, wiring and asthetics. If your serious about upgrading or changing becouse of useless ones already fitted contact Hepworth marine they do models from 2N right up to 110N

and also supply the blades and arms
and the pumps and washer bits and bobs

Hope this hepls

Re: Pantograph wipers - thanks

Thanks all. Thius looks like the way to go, on balance. I quite like the hefty ones from the above company. I'll get them to quote me unhappy in the morning! Cheers all.
