We are interested in the Pansy heater for our Freedom32. They aren't too common in California but I am told they have been sold for over 40 years. We need it to heat our boat in weather as cold as 7.2C. Any feedback would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

I don't know what mark our Pansy was, but it was fantastic. A really good dry heat and you could keep it alight for days on end, just topping up the charcoal and emptying the ash. Lighting by the recommended method was never that reliable, but a couple of firelighters usually did the trick, along with unscrewing the regulator and pumping VERY GENTLY with a dinghy foot pump. No real down sides apart from the fact that it becomes very hot to the touch (it's a heater!) and the need to carry charcoa for fuel. You will also need to site the chimney somwhere where it won't foul ropes or deposit soot all over your sails. Thoroughly recommended.

I nearly forgot, it does great baked potatoes too; just wrap them in a double layer of foil and place inside.

That's so warm that I would have to take a vest or two off in order to cope. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I've swum in water colder than that!

I had a Pansy charcoal heater in a previous boat, and I really liked it. Dry heat, little smoke and no sparks. When you went downwind of the boat, it smelt like there was an invisible barbecue somewhere.

I have bought and fitted a Bengco charcoal heater in my present boat. The advantage over the Pansy is that you do not have to take off the lid to refuel it, you can pour more charcoal in through a flap on the front, that hinges out to form a chute. I used to let the Pansy go out, and then relight it, to prevent the smoke getting into the cabin.

I am not actually sure Pansys are still made. They were made by Pascall Atkey in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

I have just taken a 1969 model out of my boat as water had dripped down the flue and it had rusted through from the inside. I have given it to someone who has had a new bottom put on it and it is going back into another boat. I still have the original leaflet - prices have gone up a bit since then:
