My heater arrived today and no instructions about how to fire it or use it!!!!
Can anyone help me on this matter?
I assume you put meths on the wick in the fire box to start?
How much meths?
How long will the wick last...
How much fuel at a time can you put in the heater body
Does all the ash go into the firebox?
The liner does not seem very durable...does it last long?
What is the method to light this unit
Thanks
Gary

We got a bit fed up of trying to light the Pansy using the wick and parafin. Normally we just put some lumps of charcoal in the heater and then get a blow-torch and light the charcoal from below. Keep the firebox off until the charcoal is well alight (WARNING! red hot embers drop out the bottom!) then put firebox on. Half-fill will keep alight for hours. Great dry heat. Enjoy!

Hello, quoting from early catalogue of Pascall Atkey for Pansy Mk V charcoal burning cabin heater
"Soak igniter with about a tablespoonful of Methylated spirits, after removing the ash can. Ignite and replace with air regulator open full until the charcoal has caught: then close as desired. If heater is cold and damp, remove the plug of cold air in the fluepipe by pouring a little meths on the asbestos lining round the vent hole. This will draw up the pipe and warm it.
IT IS ESSENTIAL NOT TO USE TOO MUCH SPIRIT ON IGNITER, SUCH THAT IT SPILLS ON TO THE BOTTOM OF ASH CAN. THIS WILL CUT THE AIR SUPPLY"

Never use paraffin to light the charcoal it will just gum up the works. Hope this helps before you freeze stiff.

I was told to fill the meths wick till the cup nearly overflows, light it and gently slide it onto the base of the stove, and leave the air vents fully open until the charcoal is well lit.

I find it takes a couple of attempts to light it this way, and it is quicker to forget the wick and use a couple of barbecue lighters. Also leaving the lid slightly open helps to get the air flowing until the flue warms up.

Once it's going it gets hot very quickly, so watch you don't burn yourself (as I have!)

, we have a pansy in our vertue , i think it has been in the boat since the 60's but it has an ingenius way of firing up , i have photos of the contraption and will try and post , first we take of the tinder box , and in itsd place we have a copper tube that screws onto the base using the same lugs as the tinder box , in the copper tube is a camping gaz burner , so we half fill the main tube with charcoal then we light the burner and keep our eye on it , after ten minutes she is puring with warmth , if the pics dont come and you want them email me ,

have fun

That Pansy heater sounds very good! Have you bought a new one? If so, where from? I'm really fed up with my woodburner, too big, too messy and smelly. Anyway, it's nearly rusted through and needs replacing. The Pansy sounds like a good option.
