Hi folks

I've been offered a Pandora 22 Mk 1 with a stub keel and centreboard, except the centreboard has been removed. The stub keel extends down with a bulb. What would be the effect of sailing like this without the centreboard?

thanks in advance

Dave

Hi Dave,

My father had a Pandora 700 lift-keel, so a direct descendant of the Trotter Pandora you are considering. It certainly needed the keel to be lowered in order to make decent progress upwind. I guess fabrication of a new plate wouldn't be too onerous, but probably not cost-effective....

There is a bilge-keel Pandora 700 on eBay now with a BIN of £400; needs some work but looks complete. They have properly shaped and ballasted keels; not the dumpy basic type. I often think fondly of my father's old 700; they were the final development of a cracking Van de Stadt design; pretty, fast and well-balanced. The addition of the retrousse stern made her into a proper little yacht. Only drawback was the lack of interior space...

Cheers,
Dave
