Panama ?

Dreaming again about one day wanting to use the Panama - have heard snippets recently about it being closed to yachts.

Now the Beeb is reporting Panama canal expansion

Does anyone know more about the current situation or what lies ahead ?

Yachts have been going through with no problems. They are/were holding a referendum whether to expand the canal, don't know the result. There was also a rumour of plans for a new canal (not in Panama) backed by the Japanese, which may be the main impetus for a Panama expansiom.

The man from panama he say YES! Overwhelming vote yesterday in favour of building another canal. Work to take 7-8 years and cost $5 billion...........

Read that - but there is nothing about the impact on yacht transits - anyone know ?
