Hi Folks,

Firstly apologies for posting on here, rather than Scuttlebutt, but knowing that a few of you have boats on the Costa Brava, figured I might get a better response...

My parents live near Palamos, and while we are out visiting them next month, we've managed to get use of a 28' yacht for a day....

Not knowing the area at all, other than by land, what would you recommend for a sailing boat to do in a single day from Palamos?... where should we head?

Will have kids on board, so beaches, anchorages, pretty bays etc will be the order of the day rather than a long sail into the distance and back....

Thanks in anticipation!

We 'did' the Costa Brava for 2 weeks last year. Palamos is an industrial port so you don't want to hang about too long there. There are a number of anchorages both north and south of Palamos and a good pilot book will give you details. I'm hesitant to recommend a particular anchorage because they're all so wind dependent. During our stay, there was a consistent onshore wind and it was difficult to find anchorages not affected by an incoming swell. Also, disappointingly, many of the best spots were full of local moorings and/or coned off for swimmers. The best anchorages are north of Roses but you won't get there in a day from Palamos. It really is a case of picking a calm day and consulting a pilot book for an anchorage with some shelter from whichever wind is blowing on the day. My cruise report is here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174081&highlight=costa+brava

Not sure how far you can go in a day but the Medas Is (North of Palamos) is a lovely snorkling area and is a fish reserve so plenty of fish. No sandy beach and no landing though but tie up to any red bouy (no charge)
If you want a wine glass bay with shelter, sandy beach and a good restaurant then see if you can get to Cala Montgo 42deg 6.4mins N, 3deg 10.35mins E It's one of our favourite spots and on the Palamos side of the Bay of Rosas.
