Hi all ,

Ive taking out my Yanmar 1gm10 for a overall and a paint job , as she a bit rusty , what is the best spray primer to use , I will be rubbing down as must rust as possible , do I use zinc primer, or standard primer. obviously I want the engine to be rust free for a considerable time , if that possible in a salt environment.

Any tips and advice would be greatful , thanks inadvance

I forgot to mention that I will not be using yanmar paint as I'm going to paint it Chevy Orange :))))))))))

I derusted and painted my yanmar 1gm last winter. I brought it home and set it up on a pallet on my bench and sprayed it with at least 4 coats of yanmar grey spray paint. It made a huge difference but before spraying i warmed up the surfaces with a hairdyer as advised by a colleague.

I thought engine paint had to tolerate higher than normal temperatures- and that zinc wasn't ideal for this?

Just to answer my own question and to aid other users of YBW, I researched from paint websites that .

You cannot apply a zinc-rich primer to previously painted surfaces. The primer must be in intimate contact with the clean metal, otherwise it will not provide cathodic protection to the metal.

So standard primer it will be . unless someone comes up with other suggestion's..

You can get dedicated engine primers from autoshops. I wouldn't use the yanmar stuff even if I wanted it the same colour, it's a complete rip-off!! I'm doing the same too shortly while the boats out the water as it's looking pretty untidy. Probably stick with silver as it makes oil leaks easy to identify.

Most places charge around £13-15 for yanmar grey. Vht silver in same size in auto shop is £6, more than twice the price to me is being ripped off.

Don't think you need to use high temp paint on diesel 1gm10 , wont get that hot, but as I am going to paint my 1gm10 Chevy orange so will be using Rustoleum spray paint but Rustoleum engine sprays only come in high temp paint, so that's what I will use .
