I was just wondering if it was possible to paint old winches in order to restore them?
I have some very tired looking winches but i certainly can't afford new ones, just wondering if they could be painted to smarten them up...?
Or would the paint wear to fast?

Any help appreciated! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How expensive is not as much as i might think...?
They're not worth a really extensive rennovation like that...
Thanks for replies! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get 'em re-chromed, not as expensive as you might think.

Any suggestions where?

My Lewmar 30s have a lot of chrome peeling off the barrels, work fine but look rather tatty.

East Coast locations if you know any.

I had my Lewmar 40s done recently, (rechromed), it wasn,t that much, less than 100€ inc carr from Ireland. Nice job too.

Come across a snag, i forgot to mention my winches are pretty old... not chromed, i think perhaps galvanised..? They're just a dull grey, point is they make the boat look shabby and i'm trying to smarten them up without replacement!

Alloy perhaps? I have never seen galvanised, personally, maybe possible to reanodise, if they are alloy, if they are galvanised, regalvanising would be possible too.

Have had success with powder coating.
All my aluminium external boat parts, hatches, cockpit doors, deck locker tops, and electrical panels are either black or white sandtex powder coated that gives a fine texture to the coating.

The winch drums were coated black and hold up well.

Inexpensive compared to metal plating and most industrial areas have a powder coating shop.

that made galvanised winches in the 60's (was it Viking?). They were very small winches by today's standards.

Interesting, thanks, the powder coating sounds a good option for the OP if they are ally.
