Painting vinyl headlining? What with?

The interior of my pride and joy has been covered with a light beige textured sheet material, presumably vinyl, glued on. The actual headlining is OK, but the cabin sides are looking distinctly shabby, especially around the windows where excess glue on the material has now turned a nasty brown colour. I realise that someday soon I will have to strip it all off and redo, but in the meantime other things are more pressing and I was hoping to brighten it up a bit with a quick coat of paint, to hide the nasty bits. Trouble is, what type of paint do I use?? I unfortunately don't have any scraps to practise on, and don't want to make it even worse by using something that will flake off in a few months.

Any paint specialists out there?? All advice greatly appreciated.

Found these very helpful. They provided me with a PVC paint and prep solution which really did the job on my tired looking canopy!

No connection with the company just a satisfied customer
Hope they have what you want.

Thanks for the info all. Some useful links there that I will follow up. I've used some Frost products before in my motorbike restoration days and found them v.good.

Hello Luddites, that seems cheap'n'cheerful, v.interesting. When you say enamel, do you mean ordinary supermarket gloss, or something like Japlac (which I've used on topsides before with success). What sort of finish did you end up with using the 50/50 mix??

Yes quite likely, never mixed the two myself but try anything once....... Eggshell would be ok as the present finish is slightly shiny. Also I suppose it gives the opportunity for a bit of experimentation with the colour.

I spent well over £1000 on Marcel Guest paint when building BigWow and when I had a problem with the paint adhesion on the coachroof and deck they were not in the least helpful or even interested. Frosts on the other hand when buying bits and pieces to restore classic cars were always helpful.

Hi there,

Just ordinary one pack paint like you've probably got in your garage, ie Dulux etc. Finish wise 50:50 gives a silk finish not unlike the original. The Mrs. has just last week done the aft cabin in our latest Westerly but used 2 thirds top coat to one third undercoat and this is really shiny, looks very good and on casual inspection looks like a new lining. We mixed white and magnolia to get a colour close to the original ivory, and er...because that's what we had in the garage.
cheers Paul

Hi Paul, that's really interesting. Thanks for the tip, and I'll definitely try it out. Has the merit of not costing a lot which is just what I want to put me on for a while.

Hi Bigwow, interesting to get another view on HMG, just goes to show you need more than one reference..........! I too always found Frosts helpful with the motorbike stuff.
