hi.
if i paint a bronze fitting with zinc paint will it stop it coroding or make it corode faster ?
I have a tin of zinc coat barnacle barrier for the prop but i am a bit concerned it might make the prop disapear

Should not corrode so don't see why one would want to paint it. You can antifoul underwater fittings.

I will be applying Zinguard from MGDuff to the prop before this seasons launch, but read this post on Sailnet - 2nd post concerning Petit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier.

I have tried polishing, and applying hard A/F to no great effect, so will be trying Zinc this year.

IMO it should not effect the brass prop, as there is zinc in the make-up of it. But I am not an expert at metallurgy. In MGDuff's FAQ's, it states that it will make a good A/F.

I should have added it was pettit zinc coat barnacle barrier that i was going to use,will use it next year and report back on results, i am based on the river blackwater in essex and always get bad barnacle on the prop,happy sailing

It certainly shouldn't corrode.. do you not have any zinc anodes???
We have a bronze folding prop and have absolutely no problems with corrosion. I scrape off the barnacles at the end of the season a every other year a damned good polish with autosol and all set..

brons or brass

A bronze prop should NOT be painted. Just polished. Bronze does not contain any Zinc, do not apply Zinc on Bronze. No Zinc anodes either.
A Bronze prop, just polished, will remain clean. No barnacles.

Brass, however, is another story. Both metals are yellow, and difficult to distinguish. Brass does contain zinc.
Some brass (prop) manufacturers claim their brass does not deteriorate, all zinc stay. If that really (really) is the case, then just polish.
Before you go for this, read the review of brass through-the-hull fittings in YM (I think) of last year. Life time was a bit limited for most of the fittings.

Otherwise, some kind of paint is preferable, as well as anodes.
