I am in the process of replacing an aft deck/locker hatch that has been fitted into a grp boat. The decking and hatch are made from plywood and will be replaced with the same. I want to paint the ply white, my question is what is the best paint selection, enamel? polyurethane? .... also should the ply be primed?

Any feed back much appreciated.

G'day Smeaks

I would cut to required shape then mix some epoxy resin then add 40% methylated spirit and paint on till it will absorb no more, make sure the edges get plenty; let this cure, give it a light sanding (just to remove the gloss) and prime, top-coat with a polyurethyne after priming.

Avagoodweekend......

Yes - use primer, plenty on the end grain. Then a rub down and coat again.
I don't use polyurethane paint cos it's brittle and chips easy ( especially on hatch) and flakes off except in the patches where it sticks like the proverbial.
These primer/undercoats save buying yet another pricy tin.

I cannot rmember the exact name of the product but I think it is called G10, it is better than epoxy for sealing wood up. If you want to go down the Epoxy route then SP systems Eposeal is pretty damn good!! I did the whole of my Merlin Rocket in it a few years ago.
