Painting over varnish

How difficult is it to overpaint varnished internal cabin plywood and get good results?

A usual preparation is the key. Minimum is to clean and degrease but light abrasion may be required. Just been doing quite a bit using Dulux special primer and sheen topcoat. First photo the panel on the left was formica and on the right new ply. Second photo is sapele veneer ply why I first cleaned with white spirit. Third photo is an earlier boat of mine that had similar treatment during the 1990s. photo was taken in 2019 and shows how well it lasted. Generally 2 coats of primer an 2 or 3 of topcoat
