Boys and girls.
Can anyone tell me the best method to put numbers on the mooring buoys. I have tried paint, markers, silkaflex. but the all come off and the Cork harbour company are keen on removing buoys and moorings that are not, in their opinion, clearly marked whether paid up or not.
please help.
Regards
Tim.

Most buoys are made from polyethylene nowadays and that's one of the more difficult plastics to paint. I have a primer that I think gives better adhesion than pretty much anything else but you would then have to paint over it with a finish to protect from UV.
PM me if you are interested but I think I would go with Savageseadog and use vinyl!

I used the local sign shop who produced the bouy number and boat name letters for a very modest sum. They have been in place for about 3 years and I suspect I would need a blowtorch to remove them.

Our sailing club had a company that makes up the plastic tags that are used on cows make some number up on tags and then attached these to the buoys, not possible to read from very far away but it does mean that you can find them at low tide during the winter when you need to put a new mooring in.

To put vinyl lettering on a curved surface like a bouy use a heat gun to shrink it down and flatten it all out. Only gently though.

I painted my new buoy with Dulux black gloss. It's still on 5 years later.

Our local authority who supply the bouy with number on it use ordinay stick on numbers but then cover the lot with clear siicon sealer (glue) which seems to work OK though it gets grubby. olewill

had this problem too. Stick on letters proved unreliable, other paints cracked and fell off. I then tried PVC paint for naming inflatable dinghies - half way through season 2 and its as good as new - under the guano! Better than any previous lettering which was becoming a regular chore.
