Hi I have a small area on the side of the deck of my my boat which has become a bit grubby. I want to smarten it up. I have a small tin of smooth Hammerite is it ok to use this paint on fibreglass? Thanks

You could use it but Smooth Hammerite will absorb water after a while and hence could cause more problems than a little. Suggest you use an enamel type paint with either urethane or polyurethane as an ingredient. Should be good for years then.

Good luck

I myself am looking for advice on painting my GRP hull. It is old 1977 so the white hull now looks grubby even after a polishing.

What preperation is needed before painting, and would I be better off going for a cloured hull (blue?) instead of re-painting with white?

I've just painted my hull with 3 coats International Pre-Kote + 3 coats International Toplac. When she was launched last week a guy on the slipway told me she looked the 'Dogs B******s!. Was that a compliment?. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think there are two options. One is to go for a 2-pack paint, preferably professionally sprayed to get back to the original boat-show level of shineyness. Mine is to paint with an enamel, white Toplac, and accept that you will repaint (usually just one coat thereafter) every 5 years or so. The latter appproach has the virtue of being much, much cheaper; and knowing that you can easily repaint makes you a lot less precious about the minor dings and arrows of life. Even major scratches are easily patched.

I think you'll find that it depends on the dog! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
