Now I use polyurethane (which doesn't have to be bought specially), touched up every three years it seems little worse.

The 2-part epoxy was the best - polyurethane OK if touched up every year. Why not try self-adhesive labels - these appear to be the most satisfactory - tho' i doubt you can now get Trike.
