Let joy be uncontained!!!!! Took possesion of new boat at the weekend and got her in the water at Holyhead. Steel Ebbtide 33 which I hope to go off cruising in hopefully not to long from now. So let the painting begin! First questions of many.

Engine paint - what's best primer for the engine and any tips? Probably have to take the lump out at some point but for now I'll do the bits that unbolt.

Baby blakes? Paint corroding on that, also is it poss to get the chrome bits rechromed?

Anyone know of a manual for aries windvane online?

I have a book at home called Metal corrosion in boats I will get the detail of author etc and let you know tomorrow. It is very good and in depth and frightening but is worth having. The learning curve is a vertical line.
 
Welcome to the world of proper boats.

There is an excellent Canadian website for metal boat owners - www.metalboatsociety.com The amount of information on there is amazing and comes from steel boat owners from all over the world.

Most important thing to remember about owning a steel boat is not to listen to owners of plastic boats and - whatever you do - don't use one for a brake. They break!!! EASILY when nudged by a proper boat.

I did the baby blakes in hammerite in the end - seems to be ok. After stripping down a slightly rusty seized up loo in my front room I'm now quite chuffed with my posh working loo. Full trials were undertaken after an Indain meal but maybe that's a bit more information than is strictly necessary.
I like the metal boat society website - lots of info.
Next learning curve is small paint external paint repairs. There are quite a few places on deck where I can see rust slowly bubbling under the paint - what do I do here? I used a dremmel on the baby blakes which worked quite well , is it as easy as sanding back to bare metal & applying primer & topcoat? What primer is best?

I had a few problems with rust bubbles in a couple of places when I first got my boat. Asked lots of questions-got lots of different answers.

As the area wasn't large I sanded the area back with a VERY rough belt on my little sander - back to bare metal apart from the pitted area where there had been rust. Treated the area with hammerite rust converter ( a slightly expensive way of buying the chemicals but cheaper than buying gallons and throwing most of it away) I then brushed on Hammerite's Kurust which is quite thick and with a bit of care will build up to the previous paint level. Leave that for a day then overcoat with whatever paint takes your fancy.

My repairs have stood the test of time. Let me know how you get on.
