My boat had been stuck in a yard for a few years when i bought her and i knew nothing about owning a boat. Over the next couple of years i did her up, replaced running rigging, serviced and repaired the engine and other general repairs. I also repainted the Topsides in Burgundy with some Blakes (i think) topsides enamel as reccommended by the local swindlery. I rubbed down with sandpaper and then painted over, no undercoat or primer. However now she is afloat i have noticed Red stains on my tender and fenders where the paint is wearing off. What did i do wrong? Can i do something to remedy the "rubbing off" in the short time until i get round to lifting her out, probably at the end of the year now?

If you have done anything "wrong" then you are not the only one! I was lying next to a burgundy-coloured yacht a few years ago and the next morning found that not only my fenders but also my topsides had acquired burgundy stains. The hull cleaned off and, being wooden, was repainted again at the start of the next season. The fenders would not clean up and had to be dumped (unusual for me.) They were a bit small anyway. I have also had a similar problem lying next to green boats.

What can be done, I have no idea. I suppose you could try a coat of varnish over to try to seal in the colour.

Maybe this is why so many people have white boats. You don't notice any colour that rubs off!

This is exactly the situation that i want to avoid. Unfortunately the hull on my boat was Red and had faded badly over the 30 years since she was built so decided to paint her a similar colour.

You can't stop it. It is simply molecules of paint that can be rubbed off by friction.

Is it single pack paint? Every boat in our yard that has been painted has suffered from this. Everyone just adds another coat every other season.

Yes it is single pack. I don't mind adding coats to smarten her up, my worry is transfer of paint onto other peoples boats when rafted up etc.

From your replies its normal for coloured paint to do this, I've never heard anyone else mention this problem so assumed it was something that i had done wrong. Does antone know of a way of sealing the paint so this doesn't happen or should i switch to 2 pack next time?
