Since that time will soon be upon us when we have to get our hands dirty (for a change!) i was wondering if any hints of the usefull variety could be steered in my direction.

The problem is Black Rat's previous owner has in his wisdom decided that instead of leaving the side white, to paint - yes thats paint, a black stripe the full length of the boat.

I want shot of this monstrosity not only as it was painted very badly, incl finger marks, runs and very hazy lines, but also because our new RED canopy is due completion in the next few days. Can you use regular Nitromors on a GRP boat or more importantly would you want to?

I am not overly bothered about a fade line, and dont really want to overpaint again, or have the hassle and expense of trying to cover it with a vinyl stripe - FORUM HELP PLEASE

it's called dilunett, alegedly "the proper stuff for GRP" and i don't disagree...

here's the but... it's 'spensive, long winded and very messy.

if you're repainting the gelcoat, it would imply that it would benefit from a key?

in the past (and the future) i use nitromors AHHH! i hear you cry... but not so.

do small areas at a time, use a decent scraper, keep a damp sponge nearby, and never leave the gloop on too long... no cups of tea half way through! the most important thing is don't do too much, and wash off with clean damp sponge when finished.

iv'e used this on almost every boat now and with good surface prep, and quality paint (i use leyland gloss thinned with white spirit... well if it's good enough for brighton seafront, it's good enough for my old boats) paint.. hand flat (600 wet and dry) and paint etc. fooled a couple of people into thinking the finish was sprayed on, and one would'nt believe it wasn't gelcoat!

anyway goodluck, and good paintwork needn't cost a fortune.. steve.

i have found that it's quicker, easier and cheaper and you can strip and repaint a small cabin cruiser in a couple of days.

Nitromors actually do a paint stripper for grp. I got some from my lovcal car spares place, not as expensive as the Dilunette gel stuff. Couple of penny's dearer than normal paintstripper.
I didn't use it on a boat but and old Scimiter before I resprayed it. I brushed it on and left it for yhalf an hour or so. Then blasted it with a pressure washer. Worked well.

i concurr.... it's the stuff in the yellow tin!

i searched hi and lo for it, but was unable to find any.... even my old paint shop supplier couldn't help!

in the old days we used to use it on all the "plastic cars" but nowadays it seems that there's little market for it... hence the green stuff and working quickly!!!

but i stand to be corrected.... as normal!

cheers for th ereply tho'
