I have a stripe down each side of the boat about 6 ish inches deep - bit of a go faster stripe type thing. I want to change its colour fron dark red to dark blue. I am fairly certain that the paint is by International and is either Toplac or Perfection. Questions:

I intend to sand back using 180 then 320 grade sand paper - is this the right approach?
Do I need to stay with International re Primer and then Top Coat
Can i go to Halfords and use a car primer and spray
Should I use a roller instead
Recommendations for a reliable masking tape

Any other tips? Boat is afloat. I may even try this on my fore and aft pile mooring - certainly the prep work rather than in a marina.

TIA

You can put Toplac on top of Perfection but not the other way round so safest to use Toplac. Should not need primer but with that change in colour suggest you use grey Pre Kote undercoat first then 2 coats of gloss. Brush or roller, but if the latter you will still need to tip off with a brush to avoid orange peel effect from the roller. Blue masking tape can tolerate delay in removing, but ordinary tape is fine if you remove it immediately you finish painting.

Easticks - you're right, my go faster stripe is a cove line also called a caveta line (sp?). Like the idea of metallic effect, might have a look at that. Did you roller, brush or spray?

What he said, plus ...

I like to use two coats of Pre-Kote, the second with a splash of the final colour in it. Seems to make the overall effect a bit richer. Also I had no problems using standard masking tape for four days when I Gelshielded my boat. That's probably the limit for white, and blue would have been better.
