Is there any reason why I can't use car aerosols to paint my boat? I'm working on the toerail, which is glassfibre, and has been painted a few times before - Can I spray aerosol paint over this? Or does it have to be marine paint? I'm thinking that car paint last quite a while on a car...

I can't think of any reasons why you can't, although I can think of one or two why you might not want to. I think if you get your boat professionally painted in 2-part stuff it is sprayed on.
"Masking off" adjacent boats, as well as bits of your own boat you don't want to paint is going to take quite a bit of effort. Also the layer of paint will be thin, so on a high wear area it may not last as well, but I don't know that for sure. Also, the paint in aerosol tins is much more expensive than the brush-able stuff in tins from a chandlery. I just did a bonnet and a 300ml tin does two coats, just.

No reason why you can't do it but you may not be very pleased with the result.
Car paints are not very resistant to the combined effects of sun and salt. They're also not as abrasion resistant as marine paints so fenders, lines and general wear will damage them very easily.

You may have problems with compatibility of paints, or a reaction with the solvents used in the car paint.

If she has 2 pot polyurethane on her you can apply with a brush or roller and tip off with a foam brush for a very good finish.

Avagoodweekend......
