Paint problem

Hi any suggestions for this - Applied top coat to hull this week using Blakes Brilliant enamel. Used the same techneque that has always worked with International Toplac i.e. roller on and brudh out with semi dry brush. Weather was warm & still, bit sunny but not that hot. The problem was that the pain just did not flow at all, consiquently lots of brush marks. Tried thinning with 10% thinners (turps sub) which made it go further but didn't help it to flow. Any suggestions? anyone had similar problems with Blakes?

You haven't been following my repaint with Blakes Brilliant, have you?
Tipping off doesn't seem to work with it. I used small foam rollers and used the exhausted roller to lightly run down the applied paint with just enough pressure to turn the roller, before re-charging the roller for the next bit.
Don't thin more than 5%

Worked OK for me

I painted mine about 16 months ago with front door paint and a foam roller, no runs, or brush marks. More to do with the paint than the method methinks.

So why does Rola-Voya have problems and I don't as we used the same paint?
I have a mate who is the Chief City and Guilds Examiner in Painting and Decorating. He reckons it's nearly all to do with method.

I had the very same trouble with Blakes Brilliant Enamel three years ago. After much exchanging of emails with Blakes during which they described me as 'not a typical painter' whatever that might mean, I abandoned their advice and used Owatrol. Blakes advice was that it must be thoroughly stirred with a stirrer that is at least one inch wide. There was some other advice but since that year, I have added Owatrol and painting is back to the pleasure it was; no brush marks nor runs.

Thanks for the advice and nice paint job lake sailor will try some experiments with brush and roller and Owatrol. Not tried Owatrol addative befor but have used there oils with good results. Is the stuff easy to get hold of or special order?

Firstly there is a difference between turps substitute and Blakes thinner (reccomended thinner reduces the viscosity of the paint others can just break it down) which might not have helped the situation and if the coating and the substrate is at the correct viscosity and temperature roller application and then "tipping" off should achieve a good finish .
Adding Owatrol isnt a million miles away from how the car refinishers of yesteryear achieved their magnificent brush finishes , they added some varnish to their last coat!!

I worked with a decorator that used pure turps in every coat he applied and rubbed down with wet and dry inbetween coats . He said this was the way cars used to be done , if you had seen his finish you would believe him . I've tried pure turps in marine paint and it doesn't seem to work so i think i may try normal gloss with the turps next time Cuchilo is lifted .
