I need to apply paint to galvanised guard rails where there has been a break in the coating. In the past I have used Hammerite after the recommended preparation but it doesn't seem to last long. Any alternative suggestions would be welcome.

I'm not sure what the "recommended preparation" is, but I would be using a zinc-rich "cold galvanising" paint over metal primer. The zinc-rich paint is a dark grey, heavy, and quite obvious. What you use over the zinc-rich paint is purely decorative, to blend in with the rest of the railing. Freshly dipped galvanising has to have an etching primer, as it is quite oily. Weathered galvanising should hold paint well.

Peter.
