Lovely white paint is flaking off my aluminium steering pedestal (bubbling underneath starting around the stainless bolts) so I need to rub it all smooth then repaint. Anyone done this before and if so what is a good paint (I guess a two part epoxy but no real idea)?

The cause of the problem may be the interaction between the stainless bolts and the aluminium. To avoid it coming back after you re-paint you probably need to withdraw all the bolts, do a clean up and replace the bolts with an inert coating on them. I believe that chromate paste is recommended for this, but have not used it myself. Hopefully someone here will tell you what to buy.

Duralac...

Duralac is a commonly-available brand of zinc chromate paste for use on fixings in aluminium. You can get it in tubes from most good chandlers.

Re: Painting alloy

I have successfully used Hammerite for this job, over a base coat of their "Special metals primer" on my old alloy davits. Has held up well for the last couple of years. For the fixings I would second the use of chromate paste to provide corrosion protection.
