Paint for a coveline. Recommendations?

The coveline on my GRP hull needs painting.

I thought gold would look good but I don't want to go to the trouble and expesnse of gold leaf.

Can anyone recommend a suitable gold paint, please?

ps I don't want to use tape.
 
There is artificial gold leaf but not suitable for outdoors. Unless you polyvarnish over it.

Real gold leaf for a thin cove line is nottoo expensive. But the time to prepare, size and lay is.

Go on, go for real gold . Then like Mr Heath and Morning Cloud when I was watching the Lallow's gold leaf artist at work, you can say, "Come and look at my floating assets"
 
There are lots of metallic paints, and they all pretty much look like, metallic paint. Pick a shade you like.
I've used 'spray chrome' years ago, looks between metallic paint and actual chrome. Not seen anything like it in gold?

If you want bling shiny Ratners, the tape is the way to go. If you want a more subtle effect, mask it up and choose your rattle can.
Not so many 'gold' metallic cars these days?

I see Hammerite do a gold paint. Would that do, assuming I apply it with a brush? Too much masking off required if I spray it.

Some years back I used 'Liberon yellow gold metallic effect paint' on my cove line, expecting to have to regularly repeat the exercise .
It's still as good as the day I applied it.
 
There are some exceptionally good gold paints now, mostly aerosol. They are based on a vacuum coated aluminium onto a polymer substrate and then stripped off. Being aluminium (coated with a yellow varnish) they look like, well gold. You might be able to buy small tins of these paints.

I cannot suggest a brand - I'm a bit far away - but try your local hardware store. (If you have difficulty send me a PM and I'll find a contact for you in the UK).

Traditional gold were based on gold leaf but this was a bit expensive and alternatives were developed based on brass, bronze, copper or aluminium flake- but the first 3 tarnished (go a look at the top of the fencing round Buckingham Palace), aluminium flake was dangerous to process and technology has now moved on.

Thinking further - one of the marine paint companies....International?.... are marketing some metallic paints, I've seen them as gelcoats on flash runabouts (and wondered what they look like after they have been repaired) ...
