Padstow speedboat wife Victoria Milligan in safety plea

She said: "Please always wear a kill cord. Even if you are coming into shore or a pier, always put it on.
"Just be aware you are driving a powerful machine and always have the right training."
Mrs Milligan added that the family had received full training before the accident.
"My husband was hugely safety conscious," she said.
"We had done our speedboat courses. He had always worn a kill cord.
"What happened to us was a horrific accident."
She has already raised more than £250,000 for Cornwall Air Ambulance.
And she is hoping to raise more than £300,000 for the RNLI and Child Bereavement UK in a http://www.milliganbikeride.com/ starting in Cornwall.
The ride leaves Trevose Golf Club in Cornwall on 20 June and arrives 272 miles later at Trinity Fields, in London on 22 June.
There are 125 cyclists taking part with a further 25 riders joining for the final Sunday leg.

Good on her, heard that too. Pretty ballsy to be going so public so soon after the incident to try and do some good out of it whilst it's still fairly fresh in the public's mind. Well done and good luck with the fundraising.

Sadly, after this event it still amazes me that stupid moronic idiots are still driving RIBs without killcords. I'm afraid every time I see a RIB I'm looking for the killcord and I still see loads with the thing just dangling uselessly. In my mind it's on a par with drink driving, albeit with a far higher chance of doing serious damage to other people apart from yourself. And as we know a drunk driver tends to crash once and stop, a RIB keeps on going.

If I can go to the effort of fitting a killcord to my old 5hp 2 stroke 2.80m dinghy in an effort to protect other water users around me, why can't RIB drivers do the decent thing too?

Most moronic idiots have not had a close friend die; sometimes it takes something that catastrophic to get the message through.

Because rib 'drivers' are not that much different to jet ski 'drivers' - mindless cretins and no I am not Dylan in disguise :)

Indeed, respect to the poor lady in doing this.

I will, however, refrain from making any comment on the phrase "My husband was hugely safety conscious,"

The MAIB report certainly didn't seem consistent with the actions of a hugely safety conscious person.

Just to be clear, I do not tar all RIB drivers with that brush, nor do I speak ill of the casualty in this case (although clearly, and sadly, the circumstances surrounding the accident are very clear).

However I do think that anyone who continues to drive a RIB without a killcord now, after all of the publicity and heartache surrounding this accident that has been made so very public, certainly does need their head, and attitude, examining.

Reaching across the person on the helm to put it into a tight turn and open the throttle wide does not seem particularly safety conscious either.

True, but she was driving and wasn't wearing her kill cord. Yet she's quoted as saying "We had done our speedboat courses. He had always worn a kill cord." Why didn't she?

Interviewed on radio cornwall, she said there should be a licence / test for all boats.

I am very sad for her loss but how would a licence or test have kept her husband and child alive? She wasnt wearing a kill cord.

The lack of a kill cord didn't cause the accident - that was down to stupid driving. The kill cord would have reduced the seriousness of the consequences.

Well, a very narrow view of the majority of rib & jet ski drivers, who are responsible. Of course you notice the idiots.. But the rest would find that pretty offensive. In the case in point: A lack of understanding about what happens if you open up a big engine while entering a turn. So, lack of experience on their boat + the kill cord problem. I am sure the (remaining) family will understand you calling them 'mindless cretins'.

We have a lot of each around here. OK, they are licenced after a course, but I have never had to worry about their activaties.
