Any tips for rounding Lands End from Padstow. What is the best time to depart etc and what are the options for landfall-?Newlyn,Padstow or straight on to Falmouth. We are not a particularly strong crew. Only elderly me and the wife /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There's some detailed stuff in Reeds almanac.

However, would suggest if you are lacking confidence that you leave from St Ives, which will make the passage a lot shorter...

Whoa, hold on there: before you go in St Ives, can you take the hard bottom, and you won't want to be there if there's a ground sea.

Tips? Well its not a difficult passage, but plan on doing it in one and for the first time do it in good weather. There are places to stop on the way but all of them are exposed and only really useable in the sort of weather that would make you want to carry on anyway - none are a refuge unless its strong easterlies.

Do it in daylight and take the inshore passage rather than going out round the longships. Coming in the other direction the tide turns at the inshore passage an hour or more earlier than outside but tbh i've neven made a mental; note of when the tide changes going your way. Probably an hour os so earlier but not sure.

Personally I like Penzance - buoys outside to wait on and nice secure lock gates to get behind. If you are small enough, then Mousehole. And of course there is Newlyn but thats full of fishing boats with no official provision for yotties.

Start with looking at the tidal charts, aiming to get close to Lands End as it changes to help you around it.

Then work backwards in time to give a realistic departure from Padstow. Use the distance information usually with the tidal charts (Padstow - Longships) to plan.

actually last year newlyn put in some shiny new pontoons to provide for yotties - they gave me a bit of a shock when I arrived in the dark were brand new and the book of words, nomminally up to date, was not...

Fisherman, fair point about St Ives, must remember not everyone has the same boat as me... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If you don't want to make things hard for yourself I would suggest not aiming for first landfall at Falmouth as the passage round the Lizard is likely to be more stressful than rounding Lands End, you may want a break between them.

When and in what sort of boat are you doing this? I am doing a similar trip from Rock. Planning on leaving around 1st/2nd July in a Cornish Shrimper. I posted similar questions to you a week or so back. I do advise you to read all there is to read including the West Country Cruising Companion. I would definitely plan to go Padstow/StIves/Newlyn or even add in Newquay if you want to shorten the legs.Good luck

You might be lucky with the pontoons but they were specifically put in for local boats in fishing boats and no official provision was made for yotties. got to admit I've not been there since then - I like Penzance and am a bit stuck in my ways. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
