Some time back someone asked the question if you should padlock your boat to the mooring..........

Well.......

The question is now "should you padlock your mooring to the chain?

When I recently went to check on the mooring ready for launch I found that some scrote had nicked the bloody lot!

Bast !

"How queer I thought"...to nick a manquey old mooring buoy, pick-up buoy and length of rope...until I priced up the replacement...

Bouy (with through mooring ring)...£130.00....Pick-up.....£ 9.99.....ready spliced rope etc £ 25.00....shackles..£9.99...

About £175 all up......so..not so daft after all

or...

It may just have floated away...........

It's really odd, in the first few years I had an expensive ( to me) boat at a marina I used to worry about leaving it on it's own ( theft, damage etc). If I had a car of the same value I wouldn't have ever left it for weeks unattended . It doesn't cross my mind anymore. Likewise our holiday home; some unease at leaving it (never more than for 2 weeks) , then complacency until it was burgled, then paranoia with security, now complacency again ( now left with al the blinds/ net curtains left open, so there's clearly nothing to steal unless they want the furniture !)

When was it last looked at, ie. inspected for wear/erosion?

your last comment could be true if a swivel/shackle failure occurred.

It's not new. I know someone who replaced their mooring chain and left it on the seabed attached to the sinker but without the buoy. When he returned in the spring to attach the buoy and pickup he found someone had dived down and nicked it. This was over twenty years ago.
