If a sportsboat boat is fitted with a paddlewheel style thru-hull transducer (which I assume measures speed via its rotation) does that mean that the usual method of measuring speed via the small hole on the outdrives and the associated small pipe that connects to the lower unit become redundant?

As long as it is plugged into something, then yes !

Am I correct in thinking that the paddlewheel transducer can only measure speed??.....i.e. it would not have been installed for any other purpose.

Sometimes they have a temperature sensor as well.

Our sensor is an Airmar DST800. This measures speed via paddlewheel, depth and water temperature.

No. On our Nimbus, the Transducer not only indicates speed through the water, but is gives trip distance. Also keeps a running total that the boat has travelled. The latter would be of interest providing that the wheel runs freely every time the boat is used.

Trouble being this is often not the case with our boat!

Isn't it the gauge that the transducer is connected to the thing that records trip distance/ total distance rather than the transducer itself?
