Any advice on where to get spares or replacements?
After several failures to start (just when needed, of course) mine has finally given up the ghost.
It was removed for me as I didnt have the tools to get at it and sent to Lucas services at Kilmarnock who are still trying to source parts. I am concerned at the time taken and the possible cost. Any advice most welcome !!

About as far away as possible for you, but I'm pretty certain I noticed recently that Marlec have at least one reconditioned S/H 4108 starter motor in stock.

Marlec Marine, 11 Military Road, Royal Harbour, Ramsgate CT11 9LG, Tel: (01843) 592176.

Is the 4108 diesel used in any vehicles at all... or a derivative, as they usually tend to use a generic type of starter motor, rather than design one for Marine use?
Did some Austin Rovers vans (preSherpa) not use a Perkins engine? Any chance of contacting Perkins themselves to find that derivative engines use the same starter motor

Thanks for the advice and contacts, I will give them all a try. I understand that the 4108 was fitted to many comercial vehicles in the 70s and maybee into the 80s they seem to have survived well in marine installations.
Im sure that many servicable units survive in scrap yards around the country, finding the models they were fitted to is the first prob. It does seem that as soon as it is fitted to a boat the price trebles.
Thanks again

Try earth mover / plant hire type place, 4108s were fitted in great numbers to small plants and are probably still being used. They were also used in Gen sets, main Van use was Transits in the 70s but not for long.

Thanks for the various comments.
Acting on one suggestion I contacted Mike Roberts of Marlec Generators(0183 592176).
He seemed very knowledgable on all things Perkins. There are(apparently) issues with some starters which were used on vehicle applications against those developed specifically for marine use. I hope to get my defucnt starter to Mr Roberts.

My starter was checked and replaced ...... near 350 quid ! I nearly died . That was on a 4-99. When they changed my engine later to the 4107 - the starter swapped over onto that one .... and it fits a 4108 ..... as long as bellhousing is same..... which often are.

So check around .... there are s/hand ones out there from the 4 series Perk's that can fit.
