Morning all. Please can anyone tell me, is Mcguiars Oxidation Remover 49 a lightweight, heavyweight aggressive or middleweight removal product? Some left with the boat when I acquired her but I don't want to, and don't think I need to, use an aggressive product at this point. Many thanks.

Without knowing the make of boat you have, makes giving advice very difficult as not all gel coats are the same.

Boats after the late 90's probably have the gel coat sprayed on and this is only 0.5 to 0.75 mm thick. Earlier than this it would have been brushed (slopped) on and would be 1 to 1.5mm thick. Westerly Yachts had a double coat of gel coat slopped on and is 2 to 3 mm thick.

As I have a Westerly I have never used Mcguiars Oxidation Remover 49. Checking on Amazon, this is what is quoted.
Meguiar's marine/RV heavy duty oxidation remover is the fast and powerful solution for surface defects. Use Our RV and marine cleaner to safely remove light to moderate oxidation, stains, scratches And tough water spots from gel Coat, fiberglass and high-tech paint surfaces. Our unique formula restores the Original color of older fiberglass gel Coat surfaces by effectively removing surface degradation with specialized diminishing abrasives that Break down and safely and disappear during application. Enriched feeder oils further enhance the finish and restore the Original color while adding brilliant shine and gloss.

So it is a heavy duty cleaner. I can recommend Meguiars Flagship Premium Wax Polish, this was recommended to me by the local glassfibre repair guy.

You may find my presentation on gel coat restoration worth looking at.

Hi thanks for your comprehensive reply. We corresponded in an earlier post about a related question and I was impressed with your results on your boat. Now I'm soon to start on my Westerly, a 1989 vessel, though I doubt I'll achieve the results you have. About to buy a buffer and was wondering about the half bottle of the product mentioned which is in a box of bits with the boat. Might experiment with a bit to see. I noted your info that Westerly double brushed gelcoat on so it started rather more thick. I don't know how many times the boat has been compounded in it's lifetime but one might expect a few times in 30 years. I'll go careful for now and see how it goes. Thanks again. All advice appreciated.
