I have a small charter business in the Caribbean, and a friend in Spain wants to buy a boat, live on it, and hire it out in the summer. He called me for help, but the rules and regulations are vastly different in my internet research.
1) the cost of a berth for a 43ft boat varies greatly, based on location and the ownership time period. Is their a standard rate for valuing berths?
2) what is annual insurance for a 43' (say Oceanis) which can be chartered?
3) do you need a special license as a charter boat? are they annual inspections?
4) can you recommend any local financial firms which are "boat friendly"
5) does demand for charters ourstrip supply in the summer in the southern areas or can you expect a few idle weeks?
Many Thanks

Can't answer all but for Q1,2,3:

1) the cost of a berth for a 43ft boat varies greatly, based on location and the ownership time period. Is their a standard rate for valuing berths?

For a 43' yacht you will be looking for a 15metre x 5metre berth. Rates will vary based on marina and time of year. There is a local tax (about a Euro a day) known as G3 which is payable after being in Spain for 6 months

2) what is annual insurance for a 43' (say Oceanis) which can be chartered?

don't know exactly - I would guesstimate 2500 - 3000 Euros (but I can get the detail given a couple of days)

3) do you need a special license as a charter boat? are they annual inspections?

Yes. Search on my name and you will find the link to Spanish regulations. The boat must also meet the charter regulations for it's country of registration. eg for UK charter yachts over here then registered on part 1 of the British register and it MUST be a "Commercial Vessel", and inspected to meet charter specification - YBDSA provide the inspection service.

Hope this helps

Steve
