Hi to all. IVE tried to find something similar to my own query but cant so sorry if this has been asked before but Im looking at buying a bayliner 2355 in ireland ill be keeping it here. Ive been told by sellers that they have no paperwork to prove they own the boats they are selling and im reluctant to purchase under those conditions.Any advice is greatly appreciated on what i need to look for paperwork wise. Many thanks

If I was buying a boat in Ireland from a broker
or boatyard, yes, there would be paperwork.

But probably not if you were buying a boat
from a family or private individual.

Last year my son purchased a boat from a broker.
After some months passed, he became concerned
because he heard the broker had gone out of business,
andother people who had purchased boats
discovered that the previous owners were never paid.

My son had some literature with original owners name,
so he contacted him as soon as he could
and was able to confirm that the boat was paid for.
But it was a stressful few days wondering if the boat
would be repossessed!!!
So it's Buyer Beware.

The main document to look for is something that shows that the seller has fear title to sell. The most common form is a Bill of Sale, but if he bought it new comment a dealer the invoice would be a substitute, and would also show VAT paid. Also useful to have some evidence that it as legally imported and has a CE mark. Subjective things to look for are evidence that the owner has had it for some time such as marinas bills, maintenance bills etc.

Be very wary if the seller does not have documentation as there is a riskafter you have bought that somebody will have a better claim to title.

So, walk if there is no paperwork.
